In Tuesday night NHL action, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timmonen was the recipient of the biggest hit of the night. To add insult to injury, the man who knocked Timmonen down to the ice was not a player on the opposing team, but the game referee.
It happened in the third period of the Flyers' game against the Washington Capitals. Timmonen was chasing the puck in the corner to receive the pass from a teammate. Unfortunately, the spot where Timmonen was going to catch the puck was the exact spot where NHL referee Stephen Walkom was standing.
Walkom actually left his feet to try and jump out of the way, but in the end it actually gave Walkom more leverage to deliver the hit to Timmonen. Game commentators pointed out that it was a good, clean hit, and Walkom actually asked Timmonen if he was OK. Timmonen was fine and was able to get up right away.
If Walkom can hit like that, imagine what he can do with a full set of pads. Maybe an NHL team should give him a tryout.
