As New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is retiring at the end of the season, Tuesday night's game against the New York Mets would mark his last game to be played at Citi Field. In honor of the occasion, the Mets paid tribute to Rivera by having him throw the ceremonial first pitch before the game.
John Franco, the Mets' all-time saves leader, was the ceremonial catcher.
Rivera had an opportunity for another save when he came into the game in the bottom of the ninth with the Yankees leading 1-0. However, in a cruel twist, Rivera gave up three consecutive hits to allow the Mets to score two runs and win the game 2-1. Not only was it the first blown save of the season for Rivera, but it was the first time he blew a save without recording an out in his entire career.
