Following Miami’s loss of the championship, a bunch of rumors around the future of the Heat and around LeBron James hit the public. In fact, even prior to the end of the 2014 NBA Finals, some rumors hinted that the Heat are planning their next big moves and they are trying to form their Big Four by bring Carmelo Anthony to South Beach. The possibility of LeBron James playing alongside Carmelo Anthony, not just in Miami but in any other team that can somehow bring those two together, seems dreamy. But can Melo co-exist with King James? How will the two megastars fit alongside each other? And which team could really incubate both superstars?
From a first glimpse, LeBron and Melo would form an almost unstoppable megastar duo. LeBron is a player who is best from close and mid-range while Melo is at his best when working from mid and long range. So a lineup which features both James and Anthony seems simply amazing on the offensive end. On defense, although Melo is not one the best perimeter defenders in the league, James is. And in fact, James is the most versatile defender in the league. If somehow, some way, the two megastars find a way to wear the same uniform, we should expect them to be as good as we can all imagine by just hearing this scenario.
Now, let’s examine how Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James can join forces, because after all, what’s the worth of examining the co-existence of those two if this can’t become reality. One scenario wants each of Miami’s Big Three opting out of their contracts this summer only to re-sign with the Heat but for much less money. In addition, Carmelo Anthony agrees to leave about $8-10 million per year on the table in order to become the fourth member of the Heat’s stardom. This scenario seems to be a great one for a science fiction film but it seems to be unrealistic. There is too much money that will have to be sacrificed in that case and major resistances from the NBA world, the media, the league and the fans would exist. We all remember the reactions from the NBA world when the Big Three came together. People called the Heat “LeCheat”, they mocked LeBron for leaving Cleveland and so on and so forth.
Another scenario for LeBron to join Carmelo wants James exercising his option to stay with the Heat for one more season while at the same time Melo re-signs with the New York Knicks. The two of them play on different teams for the upcoming season and next summer, when LeBron will again have the ability to become an unrestricted free agent and when the Knicks’ big fact contracts expire, Phil Jackson and the Knicks sign King James to a multi-year multi-million contract.
There are other scenarios which are worth examining but they seem to be too far from reality. The Los Angeles Lakers were rumored to be interested in landing both LeBron and Melo this summer. The two megastars plus Kobe Bryant would form a powerful trio. However, that would leave just a tiny space for the supporting cast around the three superstars. And unless the Lakers prove that they can be a winning franchise, there is no reason for LeBron and Melo to take their talents in LA.
