Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban was ejected from Game 1 of their Eastern Conference playoff series against Ottawa on Wednesday night for slashing Senators rookie right winger Mark Stone.
Subban clearly slashed Stone on the wrist, but did Subban deserve a five minute major and a game misconduct? The referees did review the play, but upheld the call. Here's some explanation from Puck Daddy:
Rule 61.3 for the NHL states that a major penalty must be assessed if there’s an injury on the slash. And as per Rule 61.5, if a major penalty is handed out for slashing, “a game misconduct penalty must also be imposed.”Interestingly enough, Stone returned to the bench in the second period and skated one shift in the third period. However, Subban was not allowed back in the game.
It all worked out in the end, however, as the Habs beat the Senators 4-3, thanks to two assists from Subban before his ejection.
