Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman cross-checked a referee on the way to the bench during second period of Wednesday night's game against Nashville.
Wideman was knocked a bit silly by a hit from Predators left winger Miikka Salomaki before heading to the bench. Linesman Don Henderson was in his path and had his back to him when Wideman cleaned his clock from behind for seemingly no reason.
Surprisingly, Wideman was not penalized on the play, although we have a feeling the league will want to take another look at this one. Henderson needed a moment to recover, but was able to stay in the game.
As luck would have it, Wideman was not the only NHL player to have an incident with a linesman Wednesday night. Los Angeles Kings defenseman Milan Lucic punched a linesman during a scrum against Colorado. Although that incident appeared to be more of an accident, in both cases, neither player was given a penalty. So does this mean that hitting NHL officials is legal now?
