This has been a tough month for championship trophies. First the Copa del Rey, then the Dutch Eredivisie shield, and now this:
The latest case of a damaged championship trophy comes from the world of hockey, where Finland won the IIHF World Championship trophy this past week. As players and coaches were getting off the plane on the flight home, the trophy was sitting on a red carpet on the bottom of the stairs. About halfway down the steps, goalie coach Pasi Nurminen lost his balance and fell right into it.
The local network coverage seems to show a still photo of a dent in the trophy at a celebration afterwards, presumably from Nurminen's head. We can laugh because he wasn't seriously hurt.
