A top high school basketball prospect from the Class of 2012 broke a backboard with a slam dunk during warmups for the Elite 24 basketball game in Los Angeles this past Saturday. As a result, he had to get 37 stitches in his shoulder.
Mitch McGary, a 6'10", 250 pound power forward from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, is the No. 4 nationally ranked basketball recruit in this year's high school senior class, according to Rivals.com. McGary caught a pass off the backboard from Aquille Carr and managed to complete the alley-oop with a two-handed slam. However, as McGary grabbed the rim on the way down, the backboard gave out and shattered on top of him.
McGary left in the ambulance but later returned for an interview with ESPN to recount the event.
