Video: Pirates Turn Triple Play...That Will Only Count As Double Play

The Pittsburgh Pirates turned a triple play in yesterday's game against the Houston Astros, but they will only get credit for a double play. That's because there was already one out when the play started.

It happened in the bottom of the eighth inning yesterday at Minute Maid Park in Houston.  With one out, the Astros had runners Jose Altuve on second and Jordan Schafer on third, and the Pirates had the infield in.

Matt Downs hit a grounder to the left side of second base, and Pirates shortstop Chase D'Arnaud made the easy play to first.  However, Jose Altuve appeared to make a critical mistake as he ran to third base while Schafer stayed on the bag.  Altuve was caught in no-man's land as he tried to run back to second, where the Pirates were able to tag him, resulting in a double play to end the inning.

However, as the throw was being made to second base, Schafer then decided to try to run home (not realizing that there were now three outs).  For good measure, Pirates second baseman Neil Walker made the throw home and Schafer was out at the plate by a few steps.
