Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo recorded 13 strikeouts in yesterday's 10-1 win over the hometown Cincinnati Reds. Along the way, Gallardo became one of the few pitchers to achieve the rare accomplishment of posting four strikeouts in one inning.
It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning. After striking out the first two Reds batters, Yovani Gallardo threw a 2-2 pitch to Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips. Phillips swung and missed for strike three, but the pitch bounced right in front of Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy and got away from him, allowing Phillips to get to first base on the play. Gallardo recorded his third strikeout of the inning but was charged with a wild pitch. The end result of the play was that there were still only two outs in the inning.
Gallardo then struck out Edgar Renteria to end the inning with his fourth strikeout. Gallardo was nearly struck by Renteria's bat in the process as Renteria let go of his bat as he swung.
