A fan in the right field stands of Petco Park in San Diego was hit by a home run ball hit by Padres right fielder Will Venable yesterday. The ultimate irony: he was standing next to a sign warning fans to "be aware".
It happened in the bottom of the first inning. Will Venable, the leadoff batter for the Padres, hit the 0-1 pitch from San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain into right field for a home run. The ball hit a fan on the left side of the neck as he standing in one of the tunnels in the lower level of the stadium.
Fortunately the fan did not appear to be seriously hurt. However, the irony here is that the cameras show the fan standing right next to a sign that reads: "BE AWARE OF OBJECTS LEAVING THE FIELD OF PLAY"
A valuable lesson for those of you at home: Please read the signs.
