In Toronto last night, a few fans raced through the empty upper deck seats of the Rogers Center to look for a foul ball hit by Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista. There was only one problem: they were looking through the ball in sections of the upper deck that were in fair territory.
It happened in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday as the Blue Jays hosted the Boston Red Sox. Bautista hit a deep drive towards left field off Red Sox pitcher Michael Bowden that had a chance of being a home run, but landed to the left of the foul pole in the upper deck.
Naturally some fans headed over to the empty seats to claim the foul ball as a souvenir. However, the first couple of fans who went to look for the ball seemed to have a bad view of where the ball landed. The foul ball landed in section 538, but these fans were searching in section 540, two sections away. Not only that, but as the commentators point out, section 540 is in fair territory, which becomes more painfully obvious (and more humorous for the viewers at home) as the camera zooms out.
A third fan comes over to look for the ball, but mistakenly assumes that the first two fans were close to finding it, so he joins the first two fans in section 540 looking for the ball. The third fan begins his search too high in the stands and continues to go further up in the section, while the foul ball landed in the first few rows of the upper deck.
Finally another fan finds the foul ball...in the first few rows of section 538. As the camera zooms out again, the home viewers get another laugh as we watch the fans searching in section 540 realize how far off they were from finding the ball and start heading back to their seats.
