New York Jets rookie receiver Jeremy Kerley had his helmet ripped off by two Oakland Raiders defenders while avoiding a tackle on a punt return yesterday. Despite the rule declaring the play dead at that instant, Kerley continued the punt return anyway, without his helmet.
Kerley managed to avoid two more Raiders tacklers before barreling his head into the chest of linebacker Bruce Davis, who brought down Kerley for the tackle. Kerley was fortunate to come away without a serious head injury on the play.
It seemed as though the officials ruled didn't blow the whistle loud enough for players to know the play was dead, or maybe the crowd noise made it difficult to hear the whistle. They better blow it faster next time before someone gets seriously hurt.
