As if the Chicago Cubs needed another reminder about how bad this season has gone, they got another one yesterday when they gave up a double on an infield hit.
It happened in the top of the first inning yesterday at Wrigley Field as they hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison hit a grounder to deep short and beat out the throw to first base by Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro.
Normally that would be your typical infield single, except that during the play, Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney hustled over to the area behind first base to back up the play in case of an overthrow. That left no one covering second base, and Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena was taking his time tossing the ball back to pitcher Ryan Dempster. Once Harrison realized this, he makes the heads-up play and quickly sprinted into second, turning the play into a rare infield double.
A good reminder to the Little Leaguers out there that you can't fall asleep, even if you think the play is over.
