In the bottom of the second inning during Sunday's Florida Marlins game against the Philadelphia Phillies, two fans were hit by flying objects. A young boy was hit in the shoulder with a foul ball, and a woman was hit in the head with the barrel of a broken bat.
First, Marlins right fielder Bryan Petersen (who would be in the middle of a controversial play later in the game) hit a line drive foul down the first base side which hit a young boy. First base umpire Joe West actually called for time to allow EMTs to attend to the young boy. He was hit in the shoulder and needed some ice, but appeared to be OK.
A few batters later, Emilio Bonafacio popped up to short to make the last out of the inning, but broke his bat in the process. The barrel of the bat helicoptered into the first base side of the stands and hit a woman in the head. According to an AP report, she received treatment at her seat, then later walked out of the stadium with assistance.
