Video: After Onside Kick, Does Possession Go To Steelers, Titans, or Both?

At Heinz Field yesterday, the Tennessee Titans found themselves way behind the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the third quarter. After the Titans scored a touchdown to cut the Steelers lead to 28-10, they tried an onside kick to keep possession of the ball and get back in the game.

Players on both teams battled for possession the onside kick and the referees sifted through the pile to determine who had the ball. However, in what may be an NFL first, two referees simultaneously declared possession of the ball for opposing teams, as one signaled possession for the Steelers while the other signaled possession for the Titans. This provided a confusing moment for the referees, commentators, and fans.

Eventually possession was given to the Titans on the Steelers 45-yard line. However, on the first play after the onside kick, Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw an interception to Steelers linebacker LaMar Woodley. So much for the onside kick.
