Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino slipped and fell while making a throw in the outfield in yesterday's NLDS Game 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The play is probably one that Victorino would rather forget, not only because the Cardinals scored a run a, but the play will probably be part of baseball blooper reels for a long time.
It happened in the bottom of the first inning with two outs and a Cardinals runner on first base. Cardinals batter Lance Berkman hit a ball deep to right-center field which bounced off the outfield wall. Victorino fielded it and turned to throw the ball back into the infield, but his right foot slipped out from underneath him and he fell to the ground. Making things worse, Victorino followed through with the throw as he was falling to the ground, and the ball bounced straight into the ground and rolled back to the outfield wall. In the end, Berkman ended up on third base with an RBI, but the play was ruled a double for Berkman and Victorino was given an error for the throw.
This is not the first time this year that Shane Victorino has made an outfield play worthy of the blooper reel. Check out this play from a game back in July against the Blue Jays in Toronto, where Victorino falls as his spikes get caught in the turf while trying to make a throw:
Victorino has a day to recover mentally from this. We'll see what happens in game 5. At least the game will be played in Philadelphia, where the Phillies won't have to deal with any squirrels.
