For the second straight night, a squirrel ran onto the field at Busch Stadium during an NLDS game between the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. This time, the squirrel ran right in front of home plate and continued running into the stands.
It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning of today's NLDS Game 4 in St. Louis. Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt delivered a pitch to Cardinals second baseman Skip Schumaker when the squirrel came from the direction of the Cardinals dugout and ran across home plate. The squirrel ran into the stands and seemed to navigate its way into one of the tunnels in the stands as fans jumped out of its way.
Meanwhile, Roy Oswalt's pitch to Schumaker counted as ball 2. Oswalt complained to the home plate umpire that time should have been called due to the squirrel's interference, but the squirrel was nowhere near the batter's box when the pitch was thrown. (It's unlikely that Oswalt would have had a problem if the pitch was called a strike.)
There's a good chance that this is the same squirrel that ran across the outfield in Game 3. If that's the case, we're going to have to start thinking about a name for it. (How about "Buschy"?) If it's not the same squirrel, that means there could be a family of squirrels living in Busch Stadium somewhere that needs to be relocated.
