In a Russian soccer match Friday night, a player accidentally kicked the referee with the ball. The punishment may have been a little excessive, however, as the referee gave the player a red card.
It happened in the 81st minute of a match between Zenit and Anzhi. As the referee blew the whistle and called for a free kick, Anzhi's Mbark Boussofa kicked the ball towards the spot where the ball would need to be kicked from. Unfortunately, the referee was in between Boussofa and the spot of the free kick, and as a result, Boussofa accidentally kicked the ball into the left elbow of the referee.
The referee turned around to see who had kicked him and pulled out his yellow card, then immediately put it back in his pocket and pulled out the red card, leaving Boussofa and his Anzhi teammates shocked and dismayed at the call. A couple of Zenit players even came over to console Boussofa before he had to leave the pitch.
You make the call: was the red card on Boussofa justified, or was the referee overstepping his bounds?
Yet another ridiculous red card: Mbark Boussoufa (Anzhi) vs Zenit [101 Great Goals]
