Just before halftime of the Sugar Bowl Tuesday night, Michigan was successful on converting a fake field goal attempt for a first down. However, the play didn't exactly work as it was drawn up as Michigan long snapper Jareth Glanda caught the first down reception.
The holder on the field goal, Drew Dileo, picked up the ball and ran right, but couldn't find anyone open, so he threw the ball up for grabs in the middle of the field. Two Virginia Tech players were in position to make the interception but collided with each other as the ball came down. The ball deflected back up and Michigan long snapper Jareth Glanda caught the ball and fell on the ground.
Since the ball had been deflected by a defender first, Glanda's reception was valid, so he gets credit for an 11-yard reception. Since Glanda was past the first down marker, Michigan got to keep the ball with a new set of downs.
It all ended up for naught however, as in the end Michigan had to settle for a real field goal before halftime to make the score 10-6.
