In ECHL minor league hockey action Saturday night, Toledo Walleye head coach Nick Vitucci was ejected for throwing water bottles at the game referee, hitting him in the foot with one of them. Vitucci also threw a hockey stick and a clipboard onto the ice before heading for the dressing room.
The home fans of Toledo followed up Vitucci's tirade by throwing empty plastic cups onto the ice. Also, since Toledo is a minor league affiliate of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, two small octopi were thrown onto the ice.
Vitucci was upset that an opposing player, Ryan Schnell of the Wheeling Nailers, apparently instigated a fight with Toledo defenseman Joey Ryan with Toledo already down by three goals. Schnell was not penalized for being an instigator, which set off Vitucci.
It could have been worse. At least Vitucci kept his clothes on during his tirade. However, the fans have no business throwing objects onto the ice. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
