Marquette basketball coach Buzz Williams nearly incited a riot after yesterday's 61-60 win at West Virginia by doing a little two-step dance at center court while John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" played in the background. Williams obviously didn't realize that John Denver's song is West Virginia's unofficial theme song and is played after each game.
Naturally WVU fans viewed Williams' center court dance as total disrespect. Maybe it was karma that Williams had to do a postgame interview with ESPN right in front of the WVU student section.
WVU students cursed Williams and threw objects at him before security personnel cleared the area behind the interview table. Coach Williams later admitted to reporters after the game that it was "unprofessional". You think?
Obviously Williams wasn't thinking. For a head coach to be dancing on another team's court, under any circumstances, is unprofessional. Just take the win and go home to celebrate.
Ironically, Williams benched three Marquette starting players in the first half for breaking team rules. Maybe Williams should bench himself for the first half of the next game.
