On Thursday, Kazakhstan's Maria Dmitrienko won the gold medal for finishing first at the 10th annual Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait. However, her moment of pride at the top of the podium during the medal ceremony was overshadowed by an embarrassing gaffe by the event organizers. Instead of Dmitrienko's national anthem, "My Kazakhstan", the event organizers played the fake parody of Kazakhstan national anthem from the Sacha Baron Cohen movie "Borat".
Dmitrienko deserves credit for standing through the song and not making a big stink about it (publicly, that is). She certainly had every right to be extremely upset.
It's bad enough when someone messes up the words while singing a country's national anthem, but for these event organizers to not only play the wrong national anthem, but a parody of the anthem, is beyond ridiculous.
H/T Fourth-Place Medal.
