Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds scored a goal in the second period of Saturday's NHL game against the Ottawa Senators, but it was a painful one. In fact, Simmonds didn't actually shoot the puck, but got credit for the goal after a slapshot by teammate Brayden Schenn hit Simmonds in the face and the puck found its way into the net.
Simmonds went to the locker room to get checked out, but later returned to the game. In fact, he gave an interview during the second intermission while his right eye and nose were still covered with blood.
Simmonds does not wear a visor, but after receiving seven stitches after Saturday's game, he might want to rethink that. At the very least, this should be a prime example for other hockey players as to why they should wear visors.
Unbelievably, this isn't the first time this season that Senators goalie Craig Anderson has allowed a goal to be scored off an opponent's face. Back in February, Washington Capitals forward Mathieu Perreault scored a goal after taking an accidental puck in the face. However, Perrault was wearing a visor and did not take a direct hit from a slapshot as Simmonds did. Anderson really needs to work on those face shots.
The Flyers lost to the Senators 4-3 in a shootout.
