UK television network ITV had an embarrassing blunder during Wednesday's broadcast of the Champions League semifinal second leg soccer match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich when the network cut away from the game to a news studio for no apparent reason.
It happened in the fourth minute of the first extra time period when ITV interrupted the match for a shot of the news studio. Journalist Mark Austin was standing there buttoning his jacket and making some awkward faces, but clearly did not realize that he was on the air. After about 15 seconds, ITV returned to the match, and fortunately viewers did not miss a goal being scored.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time ITV has screwed up a soccer broadcast. A goofup in 2010 caused ITV viewers to miss Steven Gerrard’s goal for England against USA in the World Cup. Even worse, ITV viewers missed Dan Gosling’s extra-time winner for Everton against Liverpool in the 2009 FA Cup. It's a rather disturbing pattern which really calls into question why this keeps happening.
