At the 2012 Italian CIV motorcycle race in Mugello, Riccardo Russo was in first place by three bike lengths with one lap to go, but finished 14th after he began his victory celebration one lap too early.
Russo slowed down and began pumping his fists in the air, thinking he had just won even though no one was waving the checkered flag. Russo stood up on his bike and put his hands up in the air to celebrate while the other bikers passed him, and by the time he finally realized his mistake, it was much too late.
Russo is not the first person to celebrate a race victory prematurely, although this embarrassing mistake was one of the more painful ones to watch.
