Miami Marlins first baseman Carlos Lee accidentally struck home plate umpire Joe West with his backswing during Wednesday night's game at Turner Field against the Atlanta Braves.
It happened in the fifth inning as Lee's backswing hit West in the side of the face, knocking his mask off. A Braves trainer came out to treat West for a cut on the left side of his face. Lee was visibly upset and apologized to West afterwards.
Fortunately the injury was not more serious and West was able to continue, but this incident could be used as evidence that umpires behind the plate could use a bit more protection.
