New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was startled by the roar of the Yankee Stadium crowd during Wednesday night's game against the Boston Red Sox after the scoreboard posted the announcement that the Yankees were officially American League East division champions.
While A-Rod was at the plate, the scoreboard was displaying the score of the Baltimore Orioles-Tampa Bay Rays game, which the Rays were leading at home 4-1 in the top of the ninth with two outs. The Orioles loss would seal the division championship for the Yankees.
The crowd started cheering when the scoreboard posted an 'F' next to the 4-1 score, indicating the game was final. A-Rod was in the batter's box getting ready for the next pitch when he was startled by the crowd's roar. After stepping out of the box and looking around, however, he realized what was going on.
When asked afterwards what he was thinking when he heard the crowd cheer, A-Rod candidly replied "I knew cheers like that weren't for me. That's for sure."
