New York Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain was knocked out of Thursday night's ALDS Game 4 against the Baltimore Orioles when he was hit in the right elbow by a broken bat.
It happened in the top of the 12th inning as Orioles batter Matt Weiters hit a single to left field. The barrel of Wieters' bat went straight at Chamberlain, who had turned to see where the ball was hit and had no chance to get out of the way.
Chamberlain was diagnosed after the game with a right elbow bruise, as X-rays on his arm came back negative. Chamberlain spent much of the year rehabilitating from a broken ankle, so he might consider himself fortunate that this injury did not turn out as serious.
