San Jose Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart laid out Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog with a bone-crushing hit during the first period of Saturday's NHL game at the HP Pavilion.
The hit set off a critical sequence in the game, as Avs defenseman Ryan O'Byrne retaliated by instigating a fight with Stuart. As a result, O'Bryne was assessed 19 penalty minutes, leading to a Sharks power play. Within the next 1:47, Sharks center Patrick Marleau scored the first two goals on the game to lead the way to a 4-0 Sharks victory.
Stuart did not receive a penalty for the hit (although he did receive 5 minutes for fighting with O'Byrne). However, because Stuart's elbow appeared to make contact with Landeskog's head, the play may be reviewed by the NHL.
Landeskog left the ice and headed to the dressing room, but did return to the game in the second period.
