Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris attacked Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney as he celebrated teammate Nail Yakupov's game-winning overtime goal in Wednesday night's 2-1 Oilers victory.
Whitney got the assist on Yakupov's power play goal at 3:52 into overtime, but Morris thought the puck deflected off Whitney's glove, which would have been a hand pass negating the goal. (The video replay here appears to be inconclusive). After Morris argued the Coyotes' case in vain with the referee, Whitney bumped Morris and appeared to taunt him by saying something inappropriate, leading Morris to attack him. (We won't repeat it, but lip readers should be able to see what Whitney said at the 1:35 mark at the video.)
Morris was given a roughing minor penalty, which seems pointless since the game was already over. We'll have to see if any further discipline by the NHL is given to Morris, who ends up looking like a sore loser.
H/T Puck Daddy.
