Minnesota Wild rookie forward Charlie Coyle received a five-minute major for elbowing after hitting Calgary Flames center Matt Stajan in the head during the second period of Tuesday night's game at the Xcel Energy Center.
Stajan was dumping the puck out of the Flames zone when he was checked by Coyle. Interestingly enough, it was Coyle's shoulder that made contact with Stajan's head on the check, not the elbow, but the penalty seemed appropriate in this case. The play will likely be reviewed by the NHL, as Coyle may be in line for a suspension if this is deemed to be an illegal hit to the head.
The Flames were unable to score on the ensuing power play. Stajan stayed in the game, but the Wild defeated the Flames 2-1.
