David Backes ejected for alleged hit to head, but officials blew the call (Video)

St. Louis Blues captain David Backes was ejected from Friday night's game at Joe Louis Arena after receiving a match penalty for allegedly delivering an illegal hit to the head of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kent Huskins. However, it would appear that the Blues got the short end of a horrendous call by NHL referees Chris Lee and Ian Walsh, as replay clearly shows Backes hit Huskins in the chest and not the head.

The call came at a critical time of the game, with the score tied at 3-3 and 10:22 remaining in the third period. The Red Wings scored on the ensuing power play and won the game 5-3.

Seems like a terrible call to us and probably should have been reviewed by the officials on the ice. MSG network's Al Trautwig probably would have had this to say:

H/T Puck Daddy.
