Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney crashed into a bullpen bench while attempting a sliding catch of a foul popup during the top of the fifth inning of Friday afternoon's game at Wrigley Field.
Barney ran from the infield to chase down the popup in right field foul territory by Cincinnati Reds batter Zach Cozart, along with right fielder Nate Schierholtz and first baseman Anthony Rizzo. None of them got to the ball, although Barney made an extra effort to lunge for the ball, causing him to lose his balance and tumble into the bench.
Fortunately, Barney was able to walk away from the crash and continue the game. Unfortunately, however, Barney also had a rough game at the plate, going 0 for 5. Barney had a chance to be a hero when he came up with the Cubs down 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and the bases loaded, but he struck out to end the game.
