The Boston Red Sox were robbed of scoring the tying run during Monday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to a blown call at home plate. The blown call made all the difference in the game and could end up deciding who wins the American League East division at the end of the season.
It happened in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Red Sox having runners on second and third with one out while trailing the Rays 2-1. Red Sox batter Brandon Snyder flied out to left field, with runner Daniel Nava tagging from third on the catch by Rays left fielder Sam Fuld. Fuld made a decent throw to home , and although Nava appeared to touch the plate before being tagged by catcher Jose Molina, home plate umpire Jerry Meals called Nava out. Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to argue the call and was ejected from the game.
Interestingly enough, Meals put himself in position behind Molina where he arguably didn't have the best angle to see Nava slide his foot underneath Molina's leg. To his credit, Meals admitted that he blew the call, according to a Red Sox press release:
"What I saw was: [Jose] Molina blocked the plate and [Daniel] Nava's foot lifted," Meals said. "But in the replays, you could clearly see Nava's foot got under for a split second and then lifted, so I was wrong on my decision. From the angle I had, I did not see his foot get under Molina's shin guard."Hmmm...if only Meals had the ability to look at one of those replays during the game and change his call to the correct one. Come on, Selig, let's implement instant replay already.
