Miami Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis was caught losing track of the count during the team's Independence Day game against the Atlanta Braves as he walked halfway to first base after taking ball three in his eighth inning at-bat.
Mathis took a 2-2 pitch that was way outside, then tossed his bat aside and started jogging to first base thinking he had walked. Mathis made it halfway to first base before being told to turn around, leading him to take an embarrassing walk of shame back to home plate, drawing some laughs from the crowd at Turner Field. Fortunately, Mathis did walk for real after ball four came on the very next pitch.
You would think that it wouldn't be too much to ask for a major league batter to pay attention to the count, as they only come up to the plate a few times a game. We're pretty sure his Marlins teammates gave Mathis a gentle reminder after the game was over.
