Cleveland Indians batter Nick Swisher was embarrassed during Monday night's game against the Detroit Tigers after being tagged out while standing at home plate on a slow dribbler down the line that rolled back into fair territory.
In the eighth inning, Swisher hit the 1-1 pitch down the third base line which bounced and began rolling in foul territory. While Swisher stood at home plate and began to prepare for the next pitch, Tigers catcher Brayan Pena followed the ball halfway down the line and watched the ball roll fair. Pena then ran back to home plate to tagg a bewildered Swisher for an easy (and unusual) out.
Kudos to Pena for making a heads-up play. Swisher obviously should have been running, especially in a tie game where every base runner counts. As it turned out, the Tigers defeated the Indians 4-2 in 10 innings, so no one will ever know what could have happened if Swisher showed a little hustle and got on base.
