San Diego Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso was charged with an error on a routine grounder when he somehow lost track of the bag at first during Sunday's game at Petco Park.
It happened in the second inning as New York Mets batter Juan Lagares hit a chopper to the left side of the infield that was tracked down by pitcher Eric Stults. Stults threw to Alonso at first, but for some inexplicable reason, Alonso was standing two feet behind the bag, allowing Lagares to be safe at first. You would think part of the job of the first baseman would be to know exactly where the bag was.
Fortunately, the next Mets batter grounded into a double play, so no harm, no foul. The Padres won the game 4-3.
