Jason Kidd stages spilled drink to give Nets extra 'timeout' (Video)

Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd used a sneaky move to give his team an extra "timeout" in the final seconds of Wednesday night's game against the Lakers when the Nets didn't have any left.

It happened with eight seconds left as the Lakers had a 96-94 lead, with Lakers guard Jodie Meeks having made his first free throw and about to attempt his second shot. Kidd was seen giving the "Hit me!" command to Tyshawn Taylor as he came out of the game while Kidd held a cup of ice and cola on the edge of the court. Taylor bumped into Kidd, and Kidd spilled the ice onto the court which required some cleanup, giving the Nets an extra minute to draw up a play and a little time to "ice" Meeks at the line.

The tactic didn't work, as Meeks made his second free throw and the Nets missed their final shot on the offensive end. No harm, no foul - this time around. However, the NBA may have to take a closer look at Kidd's "accidental" spill. If the "spilled drink" strategy becomes a trend, the NBA may have to start handing out fines to coaches for this.

H/T LBS.

UPDATE: The NBA has fined Kidd $50,000 for this stunt. That should be a deterrent for Kidd or any other coach going forward.
