New York Jets legend (and Super Bowl III MVP) Joe Namath was given the privilege of conducting the pregame coin toss at Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday night with the captains of the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. There was a bit of a hitch, however, as Namath tossed the coin up in the air before the Seahawks captains called heads or tails.
Head referee Terry McAulay had to "intercept" Namath's initial coin toss in order to get the call from the Seahawks, who were designated the "visiting" team, then gave Namath a do-over. The Seahawks won the opening toss and deferred, allowing the Broncos to get the ball first. The Broncos botched the snap on their first offensive play, resulting in a safety, and the Seahawks rout was on.
It looks like McAulay gave the coin to Namath too soon and forgot to ask for the call from the Seahawks, resulting in the confusion. However, we can forgive McAulay on this one, as he was likely distracted by Namath's flashy fur coat, like the rest of us at home.
