Boston Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski took an inexplicable tumble running from first to second base during Wednesday night's game against Cincinnati, resulting in an unusual fielder's choice allowing Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips to cover up an error after dropping a throw on a double play ball.
After Pierzynski singled to open up the bottom of the fifth inning, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a grounder to third and it looked like the Reds would turn two. While Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips blew the double play by dropping the throw, Pierzynski lost his footing halfway to second and just fell down for no apparent reason. That gave Phillips more than enough time to track down the ball and tag the bag at second to salvage the play with a fielder's choice while preventing himself from picking up an error.
Pierzynski made up for his goof later in the game with a ground-rule double in the eighth inning that knocked in the tying run. The Red Sox won the game 4-3.
