Texas Rangers center fielder Daniel Robertson spit out his gum during an ugly collision with fellow outfielder Alex Rios in the third inning of Thursday's game in Detroit.
It happened when Tigers batter Ian Kinsler hit a popup to right-center field with both Robertson and Rios chasing it. Robertson went for the diving catch while Rios was attempting a sliding catch. The end result was Robertson getting kneed in the side of the face by Rios, leaving him down on the ground for several minutes.
Robertson had to leave the game due to the injury. Fortunately, X-rays and concussion tests on Robertson have come back negative, which is a good sign considering how things looked. According to Big League Stew, Robertson has non-displaced fractures of his left cheekbone and a black eye and will be checked out by an ENT specialist.
Robertson did manage to put a positive spin on the play, saying "I heard the gum went pretty far."
Kinsler was credited with a double on the play but did not come around to score. The Rangers won the game 9-2.
