A Maldives soccer player suffered an embarrassing trip and fall during the approach on a penalty kick in an AFC Challenge Cup soccer match against Afghanistan on Thursday. Amazingly, however, the player got back up onto his feet and still kicked the ball past the opposing goalkeeper.
After watching the play, it seems a bit unfair that the Maldives penalty kick counted, given that the Afghanistan goalkeeper was clearly distracted by the inexplicable trip and fall. They may have to put a rule in against this in the future. Otherwise, there may be more players "accidentally" tripping to increase their odds on penalty kicks.
Maldives outscored Afghanistan on penalty kicks to win the match.
