Washington Nationals catcher Jose Lobaton was in the middle of an unusual situation during Tuesday's game in Milwaukee when a baseball got stuck in his mask on a foul tip.
It happened in the second inning as Brewers batter Carlos Gomez tipped a 2-2 pitch straight back into Lobaton's mask - and the ball never landed on the ground. Lobaton had to take off his mask and get some help from the home plate umpire, as the ball was wedged in pretty good. Chalk this up as a new entry in the category of "things we've never seen before in a baseball game".
So since the ball never landed, that should be an out, right? Nope - the play was ruled a foul ball. Fortunately, it didn't matter in the end as Gomez struck out on the very next pitch.
