Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph had a close call during Wednesday night's game against Cincinnati when he slipped in the on-deck circle and fell into the camera pit.
It happened in the top of the fifth as Joseph chased a foul popup towards the stands near the Orioles dugout. As Joseph ran across the on-deck circle mat, his feet came out from under him and he landed on his backside, with his momentum carrying him underneath the railing into the camera pit. Joseph landed on his feet and took a moment to recollect himself, but fortunately was OK and was able to continue.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter watched the whole thing happen and was right there when Joseph landed to check on him. Given the obviously dangerous situation, Showalter didn't want to see another player to risk injury, and he didn't wait too long to send out the grounds crew, along with a few bat boys, to remove the on-deck circle mats on both sides of the field. We won't ever see those again.
