Colorado State Rams head football coach Jim McElwain was very upset with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock for having trouble with his name after Friday night's 31-17 victory over Colorado.
Hancock was on hand to present the Centennial Cup trophy to the winner of the annual rivalry game between the two Colorado schools. However, while Hancock was congratulating the two schools and their coaches for playing "one heck of a football game", he stumbled when it came to McElwain's name, prompting McElwain to grab the microphone and help him get it straight.
Hancock may have slipped due to the similarity between McElwain and the last name of Colorado's coach, Mike MacIntyre. Still, that's pretty embarrassing, especially (as LBS pointed out) McElwain is in his third year coaching at CSU.
McElwain was clearly still angry about Hancock's slip during the postgame press conference:
“The mayor doesn’t even know the head ball coach’s name. I guess that really shows where we are and where I am as a program...Boy, that makes a guy feel good...The guy giving you the trophy can’t spit your name out? Shows you how much they care about Colorado State, right?”Ouch. Something tells us McElwain may not be voting for Hancock when it comes time for his re-election campaign next year.
H/T LBS.
