Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin delivered a huge hit on New York Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi during the third period of Saturday night's game at the CONSOL Energy Center.
Girardi was following the puck behind the Rangers net and didn't see Malkin, who was coming at full speed and laid his shoulder right into Girardi's chest, knocking him flat on his back.
Girardi was down for a couple of minutes and headed straight to the locker room, but did return for the overtime period. Malkin was not penalized for the hit, but did receive two minutes for roughing after he was targeted by Girardi's Rangers teammates in the ensuing scrum.
Malkin's hit captured the physical nature of the hard-fought game, which the Penguins won 3-2 in a shootout.
