Bruce Arians throws illegal challenge flag, sends lineman to get it, claims it fell out of his pocket (Video)

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians made a mistake by throwing an illegal challenge flag during Thursday night's game against St. Louis, but his attempted cover-up of the mistake was a bit embarrassing.

It happened in the third quarter after Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins intercepted a Cardinals pass. The NFL now automatically reviews all turnovers via instant replay, but Arians apparently forgot this in the heat of the moment and threw the challenge flag anyway, which is illegal.

Upon realizing this, Arians sent center Lyle Sendlein to retrieve the challenge flag, hoping he could pick it up and hide it before the referees saw it. That was unlikely given that the flag landed 20 yards from the sideline.

Naturally, the referees saw the challenge flag and penalized Arians by charging the Cardinals with a timeout, but not before Arians tried to argue that the flag "fell out of his pocket".

That was a humorous argument given that, again, the flag landed 20 yards from the sideline.

In the end, the Cardinals won the game 12-6, so they can chalk this up to a lesson learned. And there's no question they will all have a few laughs about this one.
