Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz appeared to blatantly cheat when he "picked up" the official's vanishing spray foam and "moved" it during a free kick in the first half of Tuesday's Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Chelsea.
Just before halftime, PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was lining up for the free kick. However, Luiz decided he didn't like the spot, so he wiped up the line sprayed by the official and simply smeared a new one a foot to the left.
Amazingly, Ibrahimovic simply placed the ball on the new spot as if nothing had happened, and the officials allowed the free kick from the new spot without penalizing Luiz. So are we to assume this is now legal? It's only a matter of time before other players get in on the act.
Fortunately, there was no harm this time around, as Ibrahimovic sent the free kick over the crossbar. PSG and Chelsea battled to a 1-1 draw, with the second leg to follow on March 11. Let's hope the officials are more prepared to prevent this shameless stunt going forward.
