NBA referee Bennie Adams had Brooklyn Nets fans and broadcasters shaking their heads in disbelief Monday night when he gave Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard credit for a 3-pointer on a shot that was taken about 5 feet inside the three-point line.
It happened with about 8:41 remaining in the third quarter as Lillard took his shot from the circle that marks the top of the key. It wasn't even close to the three-point line, but somehow Adams raised both arms up to signal three points on Lillard's jump shot. Adams appeared to have a perfectly clear view of the play, so how can he possibly explain this blown call?
The officials could have reviewed Lillard's shot on the following dead ball or timeout, but they either forgot about it or didn't think a mistake was made. The play-by-play recap of the game covers up the mishap by calling Lillard's shot a 25-foot three-pointer, despite the fact that it clearly wasn't.
Fortunately, the play didn't impact the game as the Nets won by 10. Still, this doesn't excuse a terrible job on this play. Hopefully Adams pays closer attention next time.
