Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado made what can easily be called the best defensive play of the season during Tuesday night's game in San Francisco with an over-the-shoulder catch that he held onto while crashing into the tarp.
It happened in the bottom of the eighth inning with no outs and runners on first and second. Giants batter Gregor Blanco hit a fly ball into foul territory into short left field. Arenado sprinted to catch up with it and made the grab, then braced himself for the collision with the tarp, nearly sliding into the stands. Once he recovered, Arenado was able to turn himself around and make a spot-on throw to third base, nearly making the play on the lead Giants runner who tagged up on the play.
It was such an incredible play that even the hometown Giants fans acknowledged it with a standing ovation. The Giants were held to one run on their attempted rally, and the Rockies were able to hold on for a 4-1 victory. However, we shouldn't expect Arenado to sacrifice his body so easily in future games:
"I'm just so thankful I didn't get hurt," Arenado said. "It was a scary play. To be honest with you, I don't think I'd go for a ball like that ever again."[MLB] H/T AP via ESPN.
